What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

Young woman with her hand under her chin, lost in thought

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a structured and intensive care program for those experiencing substance use disorders, mental health disorders, or co-occurring dual diagnosis conditions. A PHP program provides intensive clinical care during the day while you live at home or in sober living.

Compared to residential care, PHP is more flexible, but it is also more intensive than weekly therapy or doctor visits. It offers more hours than an intensive outpatient program (IOP), but unlike inpatient care, it lets you go home in the evening and sleep in your own bed.

Who PHP Is For, and When It Is Not Enough?

A partial hospitalization program may be recommended if you:

  • Need more structure and care than outpatient therapy or weekly clinic visits
  • Are stepping down from inpatient or residential treatment
  • Are struggling with worsening mental health symptoms or increasing substance use
  • Have experienced repeated relapses
  • Have difficulty functioning in daily life
  • Can commute to and from the treatment center
  • Have a supportive environment at home, or can enroll in a sober living
  • Feel emotionally overwhelmed, or find it hard to focus, work, or manage responsibilities

A healthcare provider can also refer you. Beginning early can help before symptoms become more severe.

Please note that only a licensed and qualified behavioral health specialist can ascertain the right level of care for you, following a clinical assessment or a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation.

PHP may not be the right level of care if:

  • You are in active withdrawal that needs medical detox. We refer you to detox partners and admit you afterward.
  • You face an immediate safety risk. Seek immediate medical attention, or call 9-8-8 or 9-1-1 in case of crises or emergencies.
  • You cannot attend five days a week. Then an IOP or virtual IOP can be a better fit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Partial Hospitalization Programs in Los Angeles

How long does a partial hospitalization program last?

While a PHP timeline can vary from person to person, most clients complete it within 6-8 weeks. Your clinical team may then recommend that you step down to an intensive outpatient program or outpatient therapy.

Inpatient treatment requires overnight hospital stays and offers 24/7 medical supervision, whereas PHP is the most intensive level of outpatient care. It allows you to go home after daily sessions. If you need round-the-clock medical care, inpatient treatment is safer.
